The Rock Theatre

A small sandstone rock formation with a rock gate and examples of sandstone erosion in the form of petrified trees.

Site Description

The Rock Theatre’s name is no coincidence. The shallow valley, home to significant rock outcrops, forms a large arch when viewed from above – a natural amphitheatre with a horseshoe shape. The local rock outcrops are composed of fine-grained, lightly lithified sandstones of the Jizera Formation. The so-called Schwarzwald Gate is a geomorphological curiosity. Its name is derived from the extinct village of Schwarzwald (Černá Novina) which once stood nearby. The gate has an arched ceiling and horizontal bottom formed by by bedrock.

The Rock Theatre is a unique example of tubular forms of iron cementing – iron-cemented sandstones shaped like iron logs. The look like horizontally laid “tubes” with a several cm thick, concentrically built iron wall. These “iron logs” were eroded out of the surrounding very soft fine-grained sandstones due to the greater strength of the iron impregnation. Another similar formation formed about 100 m SSE of the gate rock.

Skalní divadlo - železné klády

“Iron logs” and other effects caused by the erosion of sandstone

Délka zdejších ,,železných klád“ je až několik desítek metrů. Všechny mají stejný směr – shodný se směrem celého hřbetu, což je pravděpodobně dáno průběhem žíly bazaltoidu.

Skalní divadlo

Schwarzwald gate rock

The sandstone gate has developed where the rock block is about 1.5 m thick. The gate is 2 m high and 3.5 m wide. It got its name from an extinct village that once stood nearby.

Mikroreliéf

Beautiful examples of rock micro-reliefs

In the local rock outcrops we can also observe interesting micro-relief formations. These include honeycomb weathering pits with a diameter of over 10 cm, a tree groove, borings of solitary bees and salt outcrops.

Do you know that...

How did the iron logs form? During volcanic activity in the late Mesozoic and Tertiary eruptions, iron solutions were brought to the surface along with hot igneous rocks, which penetrated and impregnated the sandstone. The iron logs show the direction in which these hot solutions penetrated.
