Ralsko
Site Description
Ralsko, a true dominant of the landscape – the peak has the shape of an asymmetrical cone with a castle tower ruin overlooking it. You can always recognize it by these characteristics. Rising above its surroundings by 400 m, the peak is a hard volcanic rock risen from the surrounding softer sedimentary rocks. The volcanic rock (tephrite) in the top part rises to the earth’s surface in the form of a gigantic wall. Through gradual frost erosion, vast stone seas formed on the slopes of Ralsko inhabited by rare species of plants and animals. In addition to the peak tephrite body, Ralsko contains a number of smaller veins and chimney-like intrusions. Among important bodies is the nepheline basanite intrusion opened by the formed quarry on the southwestern slope of Ralsko.
