Stohánek

Significant geomorphological formation

Site Description

Stohánek is a significant geomorphological formation – an isolated “witness” rock shaped like a wide tower rock, carved out of blocky sandstones. The walls of the rock formations are almost perpendicular, reaching a height over 20 metres in places. A varied microrelief can be seen on these formations – overhangs, pockets, cavities, honeycomb weathering formed by erosion of the sandstone. This smaller witness peak owes its formation to the presence of a harder sandstone layer. Thanks to this layer, the peak was protected against erosion, and today, it stands out above the surrounding relief. As we climb to the top via a carved staircase, we can observe alternating layers of sandstone – once layers of sand deposited on the bottom of the Mesozoic sea. Due to its isolation, the rock tower forms an island of mixed relict forest. The top offers a gorgeous view of the surrounding area, especially of opposite Dlouhý kámen, nicknamed “petrified Titanic” for its length. Stohánek is protected as National Natural Monuments.

Do you know that...

The term witness peak has no connection to the judicial system, but means that the rock formation is evidence of the approximate level of the bottom of the Mesozoic sea 90 million years ago that formed the sandstone. As we climb to the top, we practically climb the bottom of the Mesozoic sea. Stohánek is made up of harder rock (in this case, harder layers of sandstone) that, unlike the surrounding area, has not been eroded. The summit plateau “testifies” to the height at which the bottom of the Mesozoic sea once stood.

How to Reach Us

By bike – asphalt forest roads lead here from Hamr na Jezeře, Mimoň, Náhlov and Osečná. They meet at the crossroads with the monument to Antonín Sochor, from where it is half a kilometer to Stohánek along the blue tourist trail. On foot – from Stráž pod Ralskem along the red and blue tourist trails (5 km), and from Hamr na Jezeře along the green, red and blue trails (4.4 km).
