Ralsko

The highest mountain in a wide area with the ruins of a large castle.

Site Description

Ralsko, a true dominant of the landscape – the peak has the shape of an asymmetrical cone with a castle tower ruin overlooking it. You can always recognize it by these characteristics. Rising above its surroundings by 400 m, the peak is a hard volcanic rock risen from the surrounding softer sedimentary rocks. The volcanic rock (tephrite) in the top part rises to the earth’s surface in the form of a gigantic wall. Through gradual frost erosion, vast stone seas formed on the slopes of Ralsko inhabited by rare species of plants and animals. In addition to the peak tephrite body, Ralsko contains a number of smaller veins and chimney-like intrusions. Among important bodies is the nepheline basanite intrusion opened by the formed quarry on the southwestern slope of Ralsko.

Do you know that...

The volcanites at the top of Ralsko and in the quarry on its southwestern slope and their mutual relationship have long been the subject of debate. One of the problems that complicate the research is the strong distortion of the magnetic field above the volcanic bodies at Ralsko, which makes impossible to use a geological compass due to the magnetization of the arrow. The arrow deviates by more than 90° or cannot even be rotated.
