Groß Düben gravel quarry

Meltwater deposits in the Muskauer Faltenbogen

Site Description

Pebble game: Many small pebbles of highly diverse colours are to be found in the glaciofluvial sands of the pebble quarry. Essentially, they can be assigned to four groups: 1) light brown or grey flints: They come from the chalk of the Baltic Sea region. 2) Dark radiolarian cherts: They were transported here by rivers from medium-altitude mountain ranges to the south. 3) White quartz pebbles: They come from tertiary clay and pebble layers in the Muskauer Faltenbogen. 4) Brightly coloured pebbles: This group includes different-coloured granites, gneisses, mica schists, greenschists and many others. In part, they come from the Scandinavian basement to the north, in part also from medium-altitude mountain ranges to the south (Ore Mountains, Jizera Mountains, Lusatian Highlands). Discover the pebble quarry and let the search begin! Can you find all of the different pebbles?
