Neiße terraces – Jerischke

Neiße Water Gap, Quaternary, river terraces, meander, Oder-Neiße Cycle Path

Site Description

The Lusatian Neiße cuts through the Muskauer Faltenbogen and its interior over a length of approximately 16 km in a 20-30 m deep valley between Bad Muskau in the south and Olszyna in the north. This sublime landscape, characterised by terraces and the sharply meandering Neiße, is followed along its entire length by the well-maintained Oder-Neiße cycle path: ideal for a stroll or a hike.

Despite the relatively heavy plant cover on the banks, several Neiße terraces can be viewed simultaneously from the information board near Zelz.

Do you know that...

Did you know that the age of river terraces is sometimes the opposite of what would be predicted based on deposition? Typically, younger sediments stack on top of older ones. However, younger river courses may also carve into older terraces, in which cases higher terraces are older than those they overlie.
