Glacial erratic in the market square of Weißwasser

Large glacial erratic in the town centre

Site Description

The light grey, coarse- to giant-grained, directionless granite erratic in the market square of Weißwasser measures 1,00 x 1,90 x 3,70 m and its mass is estimated at approximately 20 tonnes. It consists fundamentally of large blood-red K-feldspars and large cream-coloured plagioclases, as well as greyish quartz which generally occurs between crystals. Dark components, likely hornblende, appear in the rock as individual crystals up to 1 cm in diameter. Locally, the granite is characterised by a pegmatitic texture: K-feldspars upwards of 10 cm in diameter can be observed! The rock is partitioned by several joints, along which the granite is fine- to medium-grained recrystallised.
