Břehyňská průrva (ravine)
Site Description
If you want the most romantic photos of Bezděz, the dam of Břehyňský rybník (pond) is the right place. You will get a view of the hill with the castle over the calm surface of the second largest pond in the area. Ducks may float into your shot, and if you’re very lucky, you may see the rare common crane or the white-tailed eagle.
You will get the most interesting sight at the right end of the dam, apparently built in 1287, namely a ravine that was artificially carved in the sandstone rock with a respectable length of 30 meters. It is up to five meters deep and four meters wide at its widest point. You will find it under the floodgate, and you can get a good look at it from above. The water flows through the ravine from Břehyňský rybník to Lake Mácha, and it used to spin the wheels of the Břehyně mill.
