Dlouhý kámen (Long rock)

A sandstone plate mountain with the largest continuous rock face in the wider area called the "Titanic".

Site Description

The long rock is an example of a mesa whose flat and slightly rugged top is composed of rock more resistant to weathering than the rocks found in the overlying bedrock. The imposing rock defile of the NW face is formed by one of the largest and longest sandstone cliffs in the wider area. Due to its massiveness and size, it is also sometimes called the Titanic. The width of the peak is much greater than its height.

On the southern edge of the Long Stone there is a massive rock overhang 5 m high, 10 m wide and 5 m deep. The tower rock Přizděná stands about 400 m southwest of the Sochor Monument at the rock defile of Dlouhý kámen.

Many interesting sandstone relief shapes have been preserved in the local rock outcrops, from the tower rock, through the dead-end gate to the honeycomb weathering. The most striking is the western side of the outcrop, which is the most exposed and thus shows the power and majesty of this rock. From the top platform you can see the view towards Bezděz or Stohánek.

Do you know that...

The rock walls show alternating layers of sedimentation, coloured in different shades of ochre that gradually change to lighter shades. The colouring of the rock is caused by iron oxides, mainly the mineral limonite.
