Lake Mácha
Site Description
Lake Mácha is not a lake, and it wasn’t created by Karel Hynek Mácha. This pond, which is the largest in northern Bohemia, was created during the reign of Charles IV, and it was only named officially in 1961. But hoteliers tried to entice guests with the fact that the famous poet Karel Hynek Mácha loved this place even before that. And people started calling the pond Lake Mácha…
Even then, a hundred years ago, people could enjoy steamboat cruises, sandy beaches, numerous restaurants with terraces, a rich social life and many children’s attactions. Today, Lake Mácha not only offers rich recreational activities, especially around Doksy and Staré Splavy, it also offers natural gems in the form of the Swamp peat bog, through which an educational trail leads, and the islands Myšlín and Kachní ostrov. Those who like technical structures will be thrilled by the drain of pond Staré Splavy.
