Observation tower Felixsee

Emblem of the Felixsee Lake

Site Description

Today a popular bathing spot, the Felixsee Lake is set in the recultivated Felix opencast mine – one of the oldest in the Muskauer Faltenbogen. At this location, the seam was plastically deformed and folded upwards in the shape of a diapir, extended across a large area near the surface. As a result of these stratigraphic conditions, the coal could be extracted from a comparatively large opencast mine over the period from 1851 to 1930. In 2004, a 36 metre high tower with several viewing platforms was built on the northeastern side of the lake, offering visitors a sublime panoramic view of the Faltenbogen region.
