Široký kámen (Rock named Wide)
Site Description
The sandstone mesa forms an island in the local landscape. Široký kámen is an example of a mesa which, thanks to the presence of a harder layer, has resisted erosion better and stands out above the surrounding relief, from which it is separated by distinctive rock walls. The formation of the mesa is linked to the erosion of Upper Cretaceous blocky sandstones of the Middle Turonian. Thanks to its isolation, the summit has preserved remnants of relict pine and is inhabited by rare animals and plants. Among the flora, we can see the marsh hawkweed and, if we are lucky, the peregrine falcon will circle overhead. Široký kámen is protected as National Natural Monuments. Due to the nesting site of the peregrine falcon, the top of the mountain is inaccessible.
