SWAMP Nature Reserve
Site Description
The mysterious word swamp comes from latin. The swamp is a littoral of Lake Macha that has been gradually turning into land and where a layer of transitional to boggy peat has formed. Thus, a biotope with rare and endangered species of plants and animals has formed. The area is truly unique, with over 170 species of algae. As part of the scientific research that has been taking place here since the beginning of the 20th century, dozens of new species have been discovered. The peat bog is home to critically endangered carnivore plants (drosera rotundifolia) and other plants (vaccinium oxycoccos, nymphaea candida, rhynchospora alba). The peat bog provides a refuge to endangered species of birds like the Eurasian bittern, the Eurasian marsh harrier, the common snipe and the common kingfisher. The SWAMP is protected as a National Natural Monument and is part of the Kokořínsko-Máchův kraj Protected Landscape Area.
