The Borný Peak

Distinctive peak of volcanic origin, one of the dominant features of Lake Macha.

Site Description

A neovolcanic peak, proudly towering over the shore of Lake Macha, to which it inherently belongs – as if it were its guardian. It exceeds the lake’s level by 185 m. On the top, we can see a vein of alkaline basalt with irregular columnar separation. Below the peak, you will find small debris fields of this rock.  Although it is one of the dominant features of the Doksy area, the view from the highest point is obscured by vegetation, so you have to descend to the western slope from where you can enjoy a magnificent view of Lake Macha, Šroubený and Polomené Mountains. In the surrounding area, especially on the northeastern slope, there are several shallow mining sites where iron ore was mined.

Do you know that...

On the slopes of Borný, we can find lots of loose sandstones with goethite and limonite lining, which is a remnant of the erosion of the local sandstones.

How to Reach Us

It is a little over 5 kilometres on foot along the green hiking trail from Staré Splavy. The path is comfortable, except for the last climb to the top of Borný, which is definitely not suitable for prams. In the end, however, you will be rewarded with a beautiful view of Lake Mácha. The marked hiking trail does not take us to the very top of Borný, but to the view of Lake Mácha, which lies on its slopes.
