The Víšek Peak

An inconspicuous hill built of heavily ironed sandstone.

Site Description

Víšek is an small peak made up of heavily eroded sandstone. On the Víšek peak, the best profiles are medium to coarse-grained sandstones of the middle part of the Jizera Formation. The axis of the peak is crossed in a north-south direction by a set of fully distributed veins of basaltoid with a strong veining of the surrounding sandstone. Some of the rock towers have the character of “lids” topped with a slab of ferruginous sandstone. The iron came into the local sandstone from the volcanic veins that run under the peak. There are iron crusts, iron tubes and interestingly curved incrustations.

Iron concretions called popularly “storm balls”

Do you know that...

Near Víšek you can find smaller spherical concretions made of strongly eroded sandstone. They are called storm balls because they are often found after storms when heavy rain washes them out of the surrounding soil. They can also be seen directly in the rock outcrops.

How to Reach Us

On foot or by bicycle from the U Trojzubce parking lot, where the geopark’s Over Bukové hory geotrail also begins. The route to the top of Víšek is 2.2 km long and largely follows a narrow asphalt road. Up to the top part, the route goes along a forest path, where bicycles and strollers cannot reach.
