Turm am Schweren Berg

A unique view of a working opencast mine

Site Description

The “Turm am Schweren Berg” Communication and Nature Conservation Centre is located on the former B 156 road in the southern outskirts of Weißwasser/O.L. Bordering the Nochten opencast mine, the 30-metre-high tower offers a view over the recultivation area of this pit, and to the Boxberg Power Station in the distance. The terminus of the Muskau forest railway line is located nearby. The visitor centre informs guests about the mining of lignite and subsequent recultivation. Nature conservation in the post-mining landscape represents an important theme here. The tourism association Bergbau Welzow e.V. provides refreshments in the Cafe am schweren Berg. The sweet and savoury variations of homemade “tower strudel” alone make a trip worthwhile, but small bites, coffee specialities and refreshing drinks also await guests. Furthermore, the cafe provides a culinary setting for conventions, parties and other events.
