Velká Buková

The volcanic peak overgrown with old beeches shines with colors especially in autumn.

Site Description

The conical hill with an elevation of 474 m above sea level is the bigger twin to Malá Buková, forming a dual peak visible from afar that resembles two scoops of ice cream. From the comfortable path leading through the hillside formed by volcanic activity, increasingly beautiful views of Bezděz will open up to you. Stop by the information panel to get an image of the surrounding landscape at a time when it was flooded with sea water.

Velká Buková is adorned with an unusually wild mixed forest: old dead trees stretch to the sky like white masts, while a green jungle twists and turns below them. All this is crowned by beech trees, providing a refreshing break from the ubiquitous pines. If you see a beetle with elongated antennae, take a good look at it: it is the rare Alpine longhorn beetle that carefully chooses where to show up. It likes Velká Buková. You can combine your trip with a walk along Geological educational trail through Bukové hory.

The only place you can see the Alpine longhorn beetle in the Czech Republic is on hills in Ralská pahorkatina, on former volcanoes overgrown with old beech trees.

How to Reach Us

Preferably on foot, unless you have a sand bike… the road to the saddle between Malá and Velká Buková is very sandy. There is a nice circuit with the start and finish in the car park at the Trojzubec hunting lodge. The trip includes Malá and Velká Bukova, the defunct village Strážov and 6 educational stops, with a total length of 12.4 km.
